Zidovudine, also known as Azidothymidine (AZT), is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) primarily used as an antiretroviral medication. It is developed to help manage and treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. This compound functions by inhibiting the activity of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme critical for the replication of retroviruses, thereby impeding the proliferation of the virus in the body. Zidovudine is often utilized in combination with other antiretroviral agents as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which is effective in reducing the viral load and improving the immune function in HIV-infected individuals. Its chemical composition allows it to act as a competitive substrate, mimicking the natural nucleoside thymidine, which leads to chain termination during viral DNA synthesis.
